Fowlmere
Fowlmere is a small grass airfield adjacent to Duxford Imperial War
Museum. It's the home of ModernAir, a "self-fly hire" operation more
than a school, although they do training as well.
In the vicinity of the airfield are a bird sanctuary, Duxford Museum
and a golf corse.
The airfield has one east/west runway (07/25) of about 600m of grass,
there was a north/south strip too but that was taken out of service and
now serves as the taxiway to the runway. There's a winsock at the
north end of the taxiway. Fowlmere Radio operates on 120.92 but
arriving aircraft should first call Duxford on 122.07 as their zone
overlaps with Fowlmere's. Circuits are at 800 feet and normally to the
north, with downwind taking you between the two villages to the north
along the main road and parallel railway lines. Avoid flying over any
villages and in particular over the house off the SW corner of the
field. Current landing fees are 8 pounds. Please note that
Fowlmere is strictly PPR and
pilots telephoning for this on 01763-208281 are invariably made very welcome.
If you're looking to hire something ModernAir has some serious
going-places machines, several Archers, a Saratoga and a Malibu.
Prices may be a little higher than at some schools but you can (and are
encouraged!) to take these aircraft away for weekends, etc and without
any minimum hours required. The aircraft are all well equipped too;
full airways, GPS, autopilot is the normal fit.
Fuel: 100LL is normally available.
